Agoraphobia

What is Agoraphobia?

The hallmark of agoraphobia is having intense fear of being in places where you cannot escape or get help if you panic. Think of it like “fear of fear.” Think of it like your brain being stuck on “high alert.” When you avoid, your body and brain talk to each other, saying things like “see! I helped you avoid danger!” Relief follows, but it is short-lived. The more you opt-out, the scarier it feels when it’s time to live again. That’s where expert agoraphobia treatment comes in.

Symptoms of Agoraphobia

How do you know when it’s more than just “being a home body?” or “having freak outs?”

-You avoid places that you really wish you could go

-Your mind replays images of having a panic attack in public and not being able to survive it

-It feels painful and impossible when you “force” yourself to go places

-Your life has changed for the worse

Treatments for Agoraphobia

I provide gold standard treatment for Agoraphobia: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) & Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

CBT & ACT have a strong evidence base for treating severe panic disorder. Studies generally show 50-80% better living and symptom reduction in those who complete treatment. You can expect:

-Learning what may cause agoraphobia and why it sticks around

-Getting clear on what matters to you and letting your values make your decisions, not your anxious mind.

-Approaching the uncomfortable bodily sensations and places you’ve been avoiding. You’ll work your way up, slowly and safely. This may include spinning in a chair, holding your breath, or physical exercise. Doing this repeatedly teaches your brain to not fear these symptoms.

-Tools to get present, step out of your mind, and improve coping.
